The Sacraments: Video Lessons

Welcome to this series on the sacraments.

Throughout the history of the Church, Christians have recognized sacred acts that visibly proclaim the grace of God. These acts, often called sacraments or ordinances, stand at the center of Christian worship, discipleship, and community life. While different traditions understand them in different ways, nearly all Christians recognize that these practices were given by Christ and rooted in the teaching of Scripture.

This series is designed to be ecumenical in nature. It is not intended to promote one denomination over another, nor to argue for a single theological system. Instead, the goal is to explore how the major branches of Christianity have understood the sacraments throughout history, while remaining grounded in the Bible and the witness of the historic Church.

In these lessons, we will examine questions such as: What is a sacrament? Why did Jesus institute them? How have Christians practiced them across the centuries? What do Catholics, Orthodox, Anglicans, Lutherans, Reformed Christians, Baptists, and other traditions believe about them? Where do these views agree, and where do they differ?

We will study the biblical foundations for practices such as baptism and the Lord’s Supper, as well as the broader sacramental traditions recognized in many historic churches. Along the way, we will consider the writings of the early Church, the development of Christian worship, and the theological meaning behind these sacred signs.

This series is meant to encourage understanding rather than division. Even where Christians disagree, the sacraments point believers toward Christ Himself; His life, death, resurrection, and His continuing work among His people.

Whether you come from a liturgical tradition, an evangelical background, or are simply curious about Christianity, this study aims to provide a thoughtful, respectful, and historically grounded introduction to one of the most important subjects in the Christian faith.

Let us begin by exploring what Christians mean when they speak of “sacraments,” and why these sacred acts have remained central to the life of the Church for nearly two thousand years.
